The Ultimate Spring Cleaning Guide

The primary purpose of spring cleaning is to make sure your home’s air is healthy to breathe after a long winter. Dust, debris, and allergens build up over time–so before the sun starts shining in on your dusty window panes, we need to get to cleaning!

More than just a deep clean

To us, a spring cleaning is more than just removing dust and allergens. It’s about decluttering and organizing to reduce stress and increase productivity. We’re firm believers that your space impacts your mood and mental wellness. Studies have actually found that a clutter-free home positively affects people’s daily mood and ability to focus!

The actual act of spring cleaning can be therapeutic if you let it be. Focusing on and accomplishing an organizational task is a practice of focus and mindfulness. Seeing the fruits of your labor is always a great feeling.

How to spring clean without getting overwhelmed

We can’t stress enough the importance of going room by room and not attempting to do everything simultaneously. Setting small and attainable cleaning goals makes you much less likely to get overwhelmed–if you get burned out quickly, you’ll stop the project altogether.

Create a list of all the rooms you want to clean this spring. Then, under each room, write down what needs to be accomplished. This could be decluttering, rearranging, scrubbing, mopping, etc. Estimate how long it will take to clean each room and schedule time on your family calendar to complete the tasks.

Get your family involved

If it applies to you, get your family involved! Cleaning should never be the responsibility of one person in the home (you’re not superwoman–and nobody should expect you to be). If you have kids, be patient with explaining what you want them to help with and how to do it. We want them to feel invested in the process with the hope that they’ll feel invested in keeping the space tidy after the deep clean.

Consider using an incentive to encourage your kids to invest in spring cleaning. Maybe a dinner at your family’s favorite restaurant? A trip to the zoo? The options are endless! Getting your family involved in the spring cleaning process–and creating new tidying habits–will pay off in the long run. Need more encouragement? The steps to successful spring cleaning

SORT AND CATEGORIZE

Depending on the room, we recommend sorting through the clutter before trying to organize it. Create piles of keep, throw away, and give away to declutter for the spring. Creating these categories will make the next step much easier. We love donating clothes to Dress for Success and home goods to local churches that support families in need XYZ organization if you're local to Houston. DECLUTTER AND PURGE

It’s time to let go. It’s hard to feel refreshed and organized in a cluttered space. We know that letting go of old items can be hard for some people. Our rule of thumb is if you haven’t needed it, looked for it, or used it in the past year, it’s probably time to let go.

Consider going through food items in your pantry and makeup items in your bathroom to check for expiration dates. If you have old or ignored makeup products and are ready to upgrade to clean beauty, we can’t sing the praises of Beauty Counter high enough!

ORGANIZE AND CONTAINERIZE

This is our favorite part–where everything gets a new home. In the pantry and in the bathroom especially, use containers to organize products. The easier you can find your items, the less stress you’ll have. Create labels for your containers to make sure everything stays in its new home after you use it. We love keeping it easy by shopping at Amazon. Check out our Amazon storefront with our favorite products pre-selected for you! XYZ.

In your kids’ bedrooms and play areas, you can use shelving and bins to label where toys go. Teach your little ones to appreciate an organized and clean room too! We love IKEA’s kallax units and their billy bookshelves

MAINTAIN

Spring cleaning is great–don’t get us wrong. But the best way to approach cleaning isn’t through a once-a-year cleaning rampage. Create systems to maintain your tidy home year-round. Even small daily tasks can make a huge difference in the overall cleanliness of your home. Our favorite cleaning products come from 7th Generation. Their laundry detergent, wipes, all-purpose spray, toilet bowl cleaner, dishwasher pods, and dish soap will keep your home clean and sanitized year-round.

Establish long-lasting cleaning habits

Don’t get us wrong, we love a good spring cleaning–but we also love helping clients establish sustainable cleaning habits. A beautifully organized room can quickly turn into a cluttered disaster if not maintained properly.

Through our in-home organizing service, we’ll make spring cleaning a breeze. If doing the spring cleaning isn’t your cup of tea, but you know your home needs it, just send us a message. We’d love to take spring cleaning off your plate this year!
